The
story of a couple who cut costs
on flowers without cutting creativity: |
|
Chicago
couple Gwynne & Matt Mashon
were planning a destination
wedding in Matt's hometown of
New Orleans. They knew
they couldn't afford to spend
thousands on flower so they
went the Do-It-Yourself route.

Setting
the date of your
wedding can help
cut costs.
Avoid
February when flowers
prices are at an
annual high (due
to Valentines Day).
If you can
schedule your wedding
during Christmas
season or immediately
following Easter,

Choose
a Florist that matches
your style &
your budget.
Do
your homework before
you meet with a
florist and be prepared.
Be honest
about your budget
so the florist can
tell you what you
can afford. On your
first meeting with
a florist, bring
lots of pictures--
of bouquets you
like, of your wedding
dress, of your ceremony/reception
locations. Don't
forget to bring
swatches of your
theme color. The
more information
you can share with
your florist, then
there can be no
room for error.
Don't assume
the florist will
create the look
you are dreaming
of, unless you show
them exactly what
you want!

The
budget for an average wedding in the
Chicago-area is now about $22,000, with
flowers taking up about 8-10% of the total
budget. This includes the bouquets,
corsages, boutonnieres and floral decor
for the ceremony & reception.
Some
tips for cutting costs:
- Reduce
the number of attendants in the wedding
party or guests: This is an obvious
tip but difficult to follow once you
have the ball rolling on the wedding
planning.
- Choose
flowers that are in-season.
For
instance, your summer flowers are snapdragons,
black-eyed susans, daisies, roses, calla
lillies, forget-me-nots, sunflowers
and orchids. Check out the Flower
Dictionary to see what's in-season
for other times of the year.
- Choose
less complicated flowers.
The more moderately priced flowers are orange blossoms, lavender, daffodils, daisies, chrysanthemums,
carnations, roses,
and greenery such as ivy
Flowers that tend to be expensive: lilies of the valley, calla lilies, orchids, magnolias, peonies, gardenia, and hydrangeas.
