And the winner
is... |
|
Each year the
Board of Directors elects the one volunteer who stands
out among all of us to receive the Chaplain Roland
Knight Volunteer of the Year award. This year there
were eight finalists: Vivian DeCanio, Ken Ford, Bob
Green, Bob Powell, Larry Reader, Chuck Russo and Dr. Tom
Washburn with Dave Bullen taking the honor on January 7,
2010 at the Barnabas Annual Meeting.
Did you ever wonder why folks
are selected? During our interview, Dave summed it up
and didn't even know it. "I come when I'm called."
Involvement and enthusiasm is all it takes.
Dave spends nearly all
of his waking hours helping those who truly need
it. He works with Roland Knight building
ramps, fixing pipes, heaters and a whole lot of other
things. He visits grocery stores to pick up food
for the Pantry and he is on the Dental Advisory
Board for the Barnabas Dental Clinic. Like
a faithful friend, Dave comes "a runnin'"
if and when he can.
Dave, born, raised and
educated in the Chicago area, is a retired
Dentist. He lives in Fernandina Beach with
his wife, Nancy. They have one grown son who
still lives in the Mid-west. The Bullens are
a true Barnabas family- Nancy is one of the
Coordinators of the Barnabas Samaritan Medical
Clinic as well as a volunteer in the Pantry.
CONGRATULATIONS
DAVE!

Open Wide Please: Spotlight on the Dental
Clinic |
|
Six years ago,
the Barnabas Dental Outreach program was available
one-half day a week in Yulee. The patient waitlist
was far too long and outnumbered volunteer
resources. Change was needed! In the Spring of
2007, with a 3 year grant from the Sontag Foundation,
the Barnabas Dental Clinic opened offering dental
services to low-income patients 4 1/2 days a
week.
Dr. Frank Gupton and Dr. Daniel
Thomas co-direct the clinic. Staff includes a
Dental Coordinator as well as a dental hygienist and 2
dental assistants. There are 3 functioning treatment
rooms with a fourth to open soon. To date, in this
fiscal year, the clinic has had 1080 patient
visits.
While I've
been tasked with an article on the
Dental Clinic, I'm going to take the long way
'round the barn. Sitting with Susan Holden-Dodge,
I'm reminded of my first interview with her 6+ years ago
to become a Barnabas volunteer. After working
weekly as an Intake worker at the Crisis Center, here I
was re-interviewing, not for a volunteer position, but
as a cub reporter for our volunteer
newsletter. What Susan and I discussed,
besides details and fact verification, was how
Barnabas had NOT changed. The
dedication of the volunteers and employees,
with their continued focus on doing the best
for the clients/patients, remains
unchanged.
Now, back to the
task at hand: the Dental Clinic. Faced with the
loss of the funding - which had allowed such
positive changes to the Dental Clinic -
Barnabas began to wonder if the clinic would
be sustainable. However, knowing that the need for a
dental clinic still existed spurred Barnabas. Continuing
their "can do" attitude, Susan and her staff worked
diligently and were rewarded with a $40,000 Blue Foundation grant
enabling the doors of the Dental Clinic to
remain open to serve those in need in
Nassau county.

Getting to Know
You |
|
"I am a people person and always
have been," says Susan Mullis, the Assistant Manager at
the Barnabas New to You store. Susan was promoted to
this position last December.
Susan and her
daughter, Madysen, now 11, came to Fernandina Beach from
Gastonia, North Carolina in July of 2008. With a
background in manufacturing and retail, Susan began
her first job at New to You two months later.
Susan loves
working for Carol Reader, New to You's manager, and
points out that the entire staff works together as a
great team. Always with a ready smile, Susan makes
sure all NTY volunteers are thanked and feel
appreciated. According to Susan, the best thing about
the store is that people shopping there purchase
quality items while the people who donate these items
know the money generated goes back to the
community.
In addition to
Madysen, Susan has a dog, "Baby," and she enjoys reading
and the beach.

Proud to be Barnabas: Our
Namesake |
|
In order to understand our name,
let us look briefly at our namesake: St. Barnabas.
Barnabas was a
Levite from Cyprus and was among the first Jews to be
converted to Christianity by the Apostles.
Barnabas',
originally named Joseph, believed in the value of
encouragement. This value tends to be more private than
public. In reality, people need the most encouragement
when they are alone and struggling. Joseph was drawn to
people he could encourage. There are numerous examples
in Barnabas' life where someone needed encouragement, it
was given, and the results were positive. The
Apostles nicknamed Joseph "Barnabas" which means "Son of
Encouragement." He is known by this name in the New
Testament.
Barnabas set the
example regarding possessions that encouraged the early
Christian community to give whatever they had
for the welfare of others. The Book of Acts speaks
of Barnabas as a "good man, full of the Holy Spirit
and of faith."
As volunteers,
we also find ourselves in the position to encourage
clients. Our goal, in time of crisis, is to provide not
only resources, but also guidance and encouragement to
individuals and families that need our help. We are
proud to be named for Barnabas.
Barnabas' story is told in Acts 4: 36-37
and Acts 11:22-30

The Connection Year in
Review
|
|
Volunteers are the backbone of the
Barnabas organization. It was with this
in mind that the Board of Directors created the Barnabas
Connection almost a year ago. The mission of
the Barnabas Connection is to enhance and support the
work of Barnabas by providing support and leadership to
the volunteer corps, and by serving as
ambassadors for Barnabas programs.
All Barnabas volunteers, that means each of you,
are part of the Connection.
This past year, we set-up a working
volunteer database as well as a fledging newsletter to
be sent out three times a year. The Connection was
also proud to host a Volunteer
Appreciation event on the evening of November 2nd where
54 volunteers enjoyed a night of refreshments and
socializing while helping the New to You holiday sale by
donating holiday items.
Believe it or not, there is still more to
do! If you would like to be a member of or learn more
about the Connection steering committee, please call
Stephanie at 261-7000 ext. 104 or attend the next
meeting on March 1, 2010, 4:00 p.m. at the Barnabas
Crisis Center, 11 S. 11th Street. Also, see the
side panel of this newsletter for upcoming events
(especially the next Volunteer Appreciation event to be
held on April 19, 2010!)
(Pictured above:
Connection members Gloria Shannon, Jane Dickison, Mary
Clemens and Dawn Juds, joined by Program Manager Mary
Ann Blackall, enjoy the November Volunteer Appreciation
event.)
