The tornado damage in Joplin is difficult to imagine. Joplin's department has always been an MPRA supporter - Jerry Calvin retired as the Director there and is an MRP Hall of Fame inductee. He and his wife, Sandy, are both fine, although their home was in a heavily damaged area. The current Director, Chris Cotten, and his staff have many challenges ahead of them. The support from agencies around their area has been very strong. There are many ways you can help, too. Please visit the Red Cross page for ideas and suggestions.
We will continue to keep our membership updated as we receive any additional news. Thanks to all who have contacted MPRA about how to help - what a tremendous testimony to the support system among parks and recreation professionals!

Synopsis of NRPA 2010 Research Papers Now Available
National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) understands that research is a vital part of moving the field into the future.  We also understand with time being limited you may not get to explore all the research we have available.  As a result we have compiled a comprehensive synopsis of all five cutting-edge research papers that were released in late 2010.

Reading the Synopsis will provide you with a quick overview of each research paper, allowing you to determine which papers are of most value to you.  The Synopsis highlights the latest research on the endless benefits that parks provide to physical health, mental health, social functioning, youth development, environment, and the economy.  In addition, learn why one-third of the public believes too little is spent on parks and recreation.

Take advantage of this simplified research summary, the “Synopsis of 2010 NRPA Research Papers,” and find out how the research papers will provide you with insight to the future.

Mizzou's Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department Had a Busy Spring!

Third Annual Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt
Mizzou's Parks, Recreation and Tourism department in cooperation with Columbia Parks and Recreation hosted the Egg Hunt on April 15. The event was a great success and provided students in the PRT3215 class an opportunity to plan, implement and evaluate an event. Children ages 3 to 10 searched for 1,500 eggs.

 Annual Spring Picnic
On May 5, students of Parks, Recreation and Tourism enjoyed their annual spring picnic. BBQ, raffles and lots of fun were enjoyed by all. The event was a great success due to student support and all the prizes donated by local businesses. Almost everyone won something. Special thanks to Columbia Parks and Recreation for their support and giant BBQ grill that was needed to cook for over 125 students that were in attendance.

Rho Phi Lamda Honor Fraternity
The national Rho Phi Lambda Honorary Fraternity inducted six new Parks, Recreation and Tourism members in May. The newest members included Chase Whisenhunt, Leslee Moon, David Meeker, Laura Thal, Steven Eanet and Adam Hancox. Mizzou is one of the founding members of this long standing fraternity and they are very proud of the newest inductees.
